About switchgear
Medium-voltage (MV) switchgear switches, protects and isolates electrical networks, typically between about 3.3 kV and 36 kV. Air-insulated, metal-clad switchgear with withdrawable circuit breakers is common in primary distribution, at substations and large plants. Ring main units and compact secondary switchgear are used in distribution networks, for example at transformer substations, where space is limited and the units need little maintenance. A switchgear line-up is built from functional units, such as incoming and outgoing feeders, transformer and motor feeders, bus couplers and metering panels, arranged to match the network's single-line diagram. Each unit is rated and tested to the relevant IEC standards for its voltage, current and short-circuit level.
This page lists 10 switchgear ranges from ABB and Schneider Electric, including air-insulated and gas-insulated MV switchgear, ring main units and SF6-free designs. Use the brand shortcuts or the filters to narrow the list, open a product for its information sheet, and send the ratings you need with one quotation request.

Buying guide
Choosing medium-voltage switchgear
MV switchgear is engineered to the network it serves, so most quotations start from a single-line diagram. These are the points to check before you request a quotation.
Rated voltage and insulation level
Select switchgear for the network's rated voltage, such as 12 kV, 17.5 kV, 24 kV or 36 kV, and its rated insulation level, including power-frequency and lightning impulse withstand voltages.
Rated currents and short-circuit withstand
Check the rated normal current of the busbars and feeders, and the rated short-time withstand current and its duration, for example 25 kA for 3 seconds. These must suit the fault level of the network at that point.
Primary or secondary distribution
Primary distribution usually calls for metal-clad switchgear with withdrawable circuit breakers. Secondary distribution, such as ring circuits and transformer stations, is often served by compact ring main units with load-break switches, fuses or circuit breakers. Motor feeders for large MV motors may use vacuum contactors with fuses instead of circuit breakers.
Insulation medium and footprint
Air-insulated switchgear is easy to inspect and extend. Gas-insulated designs are sealed and compact. SF6-free designs use air or alternative insulation to avoid the environmental impact of SF6. Consider the room size, maintenance approach and your organisation's policy on SF6.
Internal arc classification and standards
Switchgear to IEC 62271-200 can be tested for internal arc faults. The internal arc classification, for example IAC AFLR, shows which sides of the switchgear are accessible and protected, and should match how the room is laid out and used.
Protection, metering and automation
Specify the protection relays, metering, motor or transformer protection, and whether the switchgear needs remote monitoring or control through a SCADA or distribution automation system. Allow space for future feeders if the network is expected to grow.
